The protest will be followed by a concert, dubbed “The Not Those Awards All-Star Latin Jazz Jam,” at a night club with two-time Grammy winner Oscar Hernandez, John Santos and Bobby Matos. It all stems back to April when the Recording Academy announced it would eliminate 31 categories from the 2012 Grammys, noting the move would maintain “the prestige of the highest and only peer-recognized award in music.” Among the categories eliminated were Latin jazz, zydeco, traditional blues, American Indian and gospel music. At the time, Paul Simon and Carlos Santana were among the dozens of artists who spoke out against the decision. More in Awards Season But now some artists are taking it a step further. Latin jazz musician Bobby Matos, who’s also the spokesperson for the Grammy Watch Group, said, “We are holding this concert to remind music fans about all the great music that has been eliminated from the Grammy. To paraphrase what Frank Sinatra said at the first Grammy Awards in 1959, ‘Remember, the awards are about excellence, not popularity.'” CBSNews.com recently asked Latin and Christian pop singer Jaci Valesquez what she thought about the elimination of Grammy categories. “It does make me sad to not honor those that have dedicated their lives to music — to not have a category for them is kind of unfair,” said the one-time Grammy-nominated artist. “But I also do understand that they have to make room for what works … they have to dedicate the most time to what people gravitate to in the masses.” And that’s exactly what Grammy organizers are doing. The sanctions are aimed at trying to derail the country’s rogue nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs. They bar North Korea from testing or using nuclear or ballistic missile technology, and from importing or exporting material for these programs. The latest sanctions resolution, adopted in January, again demanded that North Korea abandon its nuclear weapons program and cease missile launches. It slapped sanctions on North Korean companies and government agencies, including its space agency and several individuals. The diplomats said they did not know what new sanctions would be included in the resolution to be circulated Tuesday. There has been speculation that a new resolution will strengthen existing sanctions related to North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, toughen financial restrictions and cargo inspections, and add companies and individuals to the sanctions list. In the meantime, the foreign affairs panels of both houses of Congress this week will consider the Obama administration’s next policy options to impede Pyongyang’s development of missiles and nuclear weapons, which are increasingly viewed as a direct threat to the United States.

“We are certainly concerned by North Korea’s bellicose rhetoric,” Obama spokesman Jay Carney told reporters at the White House. “And the threats that they have been making follow a pattern designed to raise tension and intimidate others. The DPRK will achieve nothing by threats or provocation, which will only further isolate North Korea and undermine international efforts to ensure peace and stability in northeast Asia.” The Treasury Department announced Monday that it was designating North Korea’s primary exchange bank, the Foreign Trade Bank, as a proliferator of weapons of mass destruction. The department said the bank is used for transactions linked to the proliferation network. Treasury also made the same designation, against Paek Se-Bong, the chairman of North Korea’s Second Economic Committee, which oversees production of North Korea’s ballistic missiles. The designation freezes any assets in the U.S. and prohibits transactions with Americans. Obama National Security adviser Tom Donilon told a meeting of the Asia Society in New York that Pyongyang’s claims may be “hyperbolic.” He said the United States will protect its allies.
