phone-hacking scandal could spread from Britain to the United States

(CBS News) Actress  Susan Sarandon says her phone has been tapped by the government, and that she was recently denied security clearance to visit the White House but does not know why.

The actress made the comments during a Q&A session with filmmaker Michael Moore on Sunday at a Tribeca Film Festival event in New York.

“I’ve gotten my [FBI] file twice,” Sarandon said, according to the Los Angeles Times. “I know my phone was tapped. If they’re not surveilling you, then everyone else has cameras on phones.” She added, “I was denied security clearance to go to the White House [next week], and I don’t know why.”

Moore, who’s made films including “Fahrenheit 9/11,” “Sicko” and “Capitalism: A Love Story,” also chimed in: “I never think about it. It would unwind me. I assume everything I’m saying in an email or saying on the telephone is being looked at.”

The filmmaker also suggested that the News Corp. phone-hacking scandal could spread from Britain to the United States.

“I’ll make a prediction about something – I think the phone-hacking thing Murdoch is involved in … is going to be investigated, and it will be found that it’s been going on here too,” he said. “I just have a gut feeling.”

The Tribeca Film Festival continues through April 29.

Magician Penn Jillette was fired after his team, which also included Clay Aiken, Dayana Mendoza and Lisa Lampanelli, lost the Success cologne challenge. The mild-mannered Jillette left with equanimity, telling the camera as his car sped into the New York night that he enjoyed his time on the show, even this last episode. Echoing what probably must be on viewers’ minds as well, Jillette questioned the unpredictability of Trump’s firings and the reasons he gives for wielding the ax. This time, Trump said, the judges – marketing execs from Macys and the Trump organization – disliked the slogan, saying “You earned it” seemed smug. Since Jillette had come up with it, he was fired. Did he deserve to be fired? Possibly, but he never really pressed his real defense: He also came up with the asset the judges liked best – a photo of an amorous Mendoza nuzzling the chest of a well-toned male model, seen only from the neck down wearing a shirt and tie from the Trump collection. Then again, as Aiken pointed out early in the episode, Jillette had demurred on leading the project and then showed with his ideas that he could have done so quite competently. Aiken, for his part, avoided the mistake that got Paul Teutel Sr., fired last week. When Trump said the judges didn’t like the slogan, he brought its creator back to the boardroom. But his other choice reflected, not what was done or not done in this particular task, but on a long-range view of who would be best to continue on in the competition. He took the weaker player, Mendoza, to the boardroom with him and let the stronger contestant, Lampanelli, join the winning team in the suite upstairs. But, judging from what viewers saw, the usually creative and strong-willed Lampanelli did relatively little on this task. Should she have been taken to the boardroom instead?. This clearly was not the time to fire Mendoza. Her efforts with the photo won praise from the judges and she even suggested that they create take-aways for the display, something Aiken nixed for lack of time. We’re just guessing here, but had the other team (consisting of Aubrey O’Day, Teresa Giudice and Arsenio Hall) lost the challenge, there would have been fireworks in the boardroom. ‘Day’s egotism and carping about how she was carrying the entire load alone did little to endear to the judges, her teammates and the Trumps. And Hall, who came up with the slogan, had murder in his eyes when O’Day took credit for it. The slogan – “Always trust your instincts” – was something Trump himself had said and that Hall had discovered by doing research on the computer. Instead of giving the winners time to vent, Trump sidestepped their disagreements and he sent them upstairs to celebrate. And everyone yet again pretended to get along. According to WXPI in Pittsburgh, Pa., police say that Acosta was not supposed to be at the Pittsburgh Convention Center during the “American Idol” auditions last week. When asked to vacate the premises, the report states she “refused to leave and became combative.” Acosta is being charged with trespassing and resisting arrest. Acosta admitted to ABC affiliate WTAE in Pittsburgh that she has been traveling to various cities and attempting to audition for the show, and it’s her dream to make it as a singer. “I have a stack this big of airline tickets,” Acosta said to WTAE. “I’ve been to California everywhere. I’ve been to Texas. I’ve been to Arizona. St. Louis. I’ve been to Denver, Colo., here, New York — I can keep going.” The “American Idol” hopeful told both Pittsburgh stations the police report is wrong. She admitted to being questioned by security at the audition, but says one member of the staff told her she was not trespassing and went upstairs to clear the matter. According to Acosta, she was arrested after that person left. She also strongly denies the claim in the police report that she said, “I’m not leaving, this is my dream, my life is ruined.” “I said, ‘I wasted almost $10,000 this summer traveling.’ I’m pretty much broke until I work this weekend,” she told WTAE. “I think it’s going to be better anyways. Christina Aguilera (a ‘Voice’ judge) is from here, so I’d like to compare myself to her, and I love her,” Acosta said to WTAE.
